Zo noemden we je, dat was jouw koosnaampje. Je bent er nu niet meer. We hebben afscheid moeten nemen van jou omwille van een vreselijke ziekte die niet te genezen was.

Je bent in 2017 al zwervend bij ons terechtgekomen als een hoopje ellende. We wisten niet waar je vandaan kwam, we wisten niet hoe oud je was... We wisten niets van jou. Je was niet om aan te zien, je had open wonden, we gaven jou geen cent meer om te overleven.

Maar dank zij de uitstekende zorg van Monique ben je er toch weer bovenop geraakt. Je werd opnieuw een mooie, levenslustige kat die maar één doel voor ogen had: het verdedigen van jouw territorium. Je kon je naar hartenlust uitleven in onze tuin en ons bos. Jij was daar de baas, geen enkele andere kat liet je toe.

Je hebt honderden, zo niet duizenden toertjes gemaakt door bos en tuin om alles te controleren en te zien of alles nog in orde was. Je ving muizen, ja zelfs ratten waren niet veilig voor jou.

's Avonds kwam je met de regelmaat van een klok voor het vensterraam van de keuken zitten, als teken voor ons dat je naar binnen wou. In de garage had je een zacht, warm mandje staan waar je je deugddoend in neer vleide om aan een welverdiende nachtrust te beginnen. Jaren heb je die gewoontes gehad en dat was zeer aangenaam en leuk voor ons om dit te ervaren.

Je speelde en rollebolde in de tuin, je verstopte je om dan een verrassingsaanval uit te voeren op ons vanachter een struik of een graszode... Je was speels, je zat vol energie.

Tot een paar weken geleden, het was zondag 31 juli 2022... Je was er plots niet wanneer Monique je 's avonds riep om binnen te komen. We werden ongerust, dachten dat er iets was gebeurd. Ik heb nog gezocht naar jou, maar niet gevonden. We hadden 's anderendaags 's morgens eigenlijk alle hoop al opgegeven omdat je nog nooit verstek had gelaten om 's avonds binnen te komen. Tot het verlossende telefoontje kwam dat je die maandag 1 augustus 2022 in de namiddag toch weer opdook. Maar er was iets gebeurd: je was niet meer het Vestertje dat je altijd was geweest. Je at niet meer, of toch zeer weinig, je was lusteloos...

We zijn toen naar de vertrouwde arts Noël geweest met jou en die heeft toen gemerkt dat je met koorts zat. Je hebt de nodige medicatie gekregen maar toch: de eetlust bleef achter.

Na een week heeft de arts dan een bloedafname uitgevoerd en toen kwam het vreselijke verdict: het bloed was allesbehalve goed. Het resultaat van een bijkomende bloedanalyse was voor ons een mokerslag: je had een ongeneeslijke ziekte...

Toen ben je dag na dag achteruit gegaan. Je hebt tijdens die laatste periode heel veel en heel goede zorgen gekregen van Monique: ze name je in haar armen en ging ontelbare keren gaan wandelen met jou, zodat je nog eens buiten kon zijn. Je hebt zelfs zelf nog verschillende keren kunnen gaan wandelen, maar altijd onder het toezicht van Monique omdat we zeker niet opnieuw wilden dat je niet meer thuis zou komen. En daarbij, je was reeds teveel verzwakt...

Dinsdag 23 augustus ben je een laatste keer zelf gaan wandelen met Monique en mezelf maar toen zagen we al dat je moeite had om enkele meters te stappen. Je begon wezenloos voor jou uit te staren en je zette je al na enkele stapjes neer... We wisten dat het niet lang meer zou duren.

Op woensdag 24 augustus ben je dan toch nog een laatste keer gaan wandelen onder toezicht van Monique, maar we zagen dat je pijn begon te krijgen. En dat wilden we ten allen tijde vermijden.

Na een laatste onderzoek bij de arts heeft deze gezegd dat het beter was om jou uit je lijden te verlossen en je te laten inslapen. Opnieuw een zeer harde beslissing die we moesten nemen, maar op zo'n momenten moeten we oordelen over jouw welzijn, niet ons verdriet.

Je bent zachtjes heengegaan en ligt nu begraven naast Zwartje, Spooky en Tilly.

Het ga je goed, Vestertje. Bedankt voor de 5 jaren dat je ons hebt geschonken. Je toonde ons dat je ons dankbaar was dat we je hadden opgevangen en gered van een gewisse dood.

We zullen je nooit meer zien waken in ons bos en in de tuin, we zullen je nooit meer zien voor het keukenvenster zitten, we zullen je nooit meer in jouw mandje zien liggen in de garage, we zullen je nooit meer zien genieten van het zonnetje op het terras, we zullen je nooit meer zien liggen in jouw strandzetel, we zullen je nooit meer zien "aanvallen" van achter een struik of een bloem, we zullen je nooit meer zien helpen in de tuin, we zullen je nooit meer zien "zot" rondkoersen in de tuin, we zullen je nooit meer zien helpen bij het ophangen of binnenhalen van de was, kortom, we zullen je nooit meer... zien...

Uiteraard blijf je in onze gedachten verder leven. Wij blijven verweesd achter, we voelen enorm het gemis, maar jouw gezondheidstoestand had voorrang op onze gevoelens en emoties. Je mocht absoluut niet verder meer lijden.

Slaap nu maar zacht, lieve Vestertje. Je voelt geen pijn meer in de poezenhemel en je bent aangekomen bij jouw vriendjes. Je hebt voor altijd een plaatsje verdiend in ons hart, naast onze vele andere vriendjes die reeds zijn heen gegaan.

We zijn er zeker van dat we elkaar ooit nog eens terugzien. Daar kijken we nu al naar uit.
